Good food. GREAT SERVICE. For a sleepy little interstate town out in the middle of nowhere this is a welcome relief from the road. Great place to tank up before checking into a hotel or hitting the road. They are exactly half way between Phoenix AZ and Dallas Texas.

We recently visited the Silver Moon for dinner while we were in Santa Rosa. My hubby was exhausted after a very long drive, so I walked over to get us some take away for dinner back in our hotel room. So I did have an experience, just not in the dining room. Here's what I experienced: 1. I found the staff very nice and friendly. I hung out with the gentleman running the cashier's spot. He helped me decided on our dinner entrees and we just chatted a lot while I waited for my food to be ready to go. Always a plus! 2. The food was reasonably priced and tasted ok. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't super amazing either. It did taste good after a long drive. We had the Enchiladas de Santa Fe and the Chicken Tacos. Both hit the spot, but I would say they both needed a little more umph or spiciness or something align those lines. We ate everything except the posole, which really wasn't good at all. Neither of us cared for their version of it. 3. The chips and salsa were awesome! I'm not sure why or what they did differently, but these were darn good chips and salsa! If you are in the area, I would recommend the Silver Moon for a nice bite to eat!

So this place is essentially in the middle of nowhere; a quaint little place to eat for travelers. I suggest moving on from this place. Yes, it is true that this place does have history but it's not worth it if the food is going to be of tawdry quality. I had a sandwich which was mediocre at best. I tried out one of the pastas and it left a bilious feeling inside my digestive tract. On top of this, the service was as slow as a snail.

Awful. By far the worst place we ate during our week long cross country trip. Pretty expensive for horrible service and gross food. The place was only surface clean, if you looked around everything was really grungy, dust on everything on the walls and clutter everywhere in the gift shop, Thank goodness I did not use the restrooms. We arrived for dinner at 6pm. Our waitress was seated at the both behind us eating her dinner and was obviously annoyed that we were interrupting her. 6 o'clock is pretty prime dinner time, probably not the best time for the staff to eat their dinner. She came to the table still chewing down her food and expected us immediately to order drinks and food at all once. When we told her to give us a few more minutes to look at the menu she then have us about 20 minutes. Food: We have since learned that most restaurants that have both Mexican dishes and American dishes and specialize in breakfast are not going to be very good. But as our first stop in New Mexico, we wanted Mexican food. I ordered the enchiladas and my husband got some combo with about one of everything. It was all greasy, bland and room temp (mostly because I think our waitress neglected to bring it to us while she was enjoying her dinner). Rice and beans and posole were obviously right out of a can. It was not the most disgusting food i've eaten but the fast food Taco Beuno we had the next day was MUCH better! Also, there was a man there dressed in a suit that was in and out of the kitchen and back areas helping out so we assumed he was higher management or owner. And instead of stopping by tables asking how things were and such he rushed by people and avoided eye contact, obviously ashamed of what was being served!

This place is a good example of why it's important to read the reviews PRIOR to the moment you're standing next to the front register, awaiting a table. Because I didn't. As I stood there next to my rather frail, aging father, wondering when the owner would acknowledge us, I checked out the reviews and they basically summarized the following: poor service, crappy food. Fair warning. "How many? Two? Let me see if I have a table." They did have a table. Many. It was 2pm. She led us to a booth and set some menus on the table. The menus were actually pretty impressive. Colorful, with plenty of pictures, the place appeared to have a breadth of options that appeared worth investigating, as well as a tiny but fair selection of local brews. So again I checked the reviews and took fair warning: order something safe. Ten minutes later the hurried waitress (who totally gets five stars for her agility) managed to grab our order. "Um, if you know what you want to eat, let's just do that now." I've worked the cafe circuit, I knew what she was dealing with: too many tables. The place definitely understaffs. And it sucked. It sucked for our cool waitress, who was wrought with stress. It sucked for the patrons, who expected the basics. And it sucked worse when the burgers we ordered (safe, right?) were worse than anything Dairy Queen up the street could put together. My Texas Barbecue burger was missing one minor ingredient: barbecue sauce. So yeah, you get the idea. Santa Rosa appears to be a pretty big place, so there must be some better options. But if you do find yourself taking this particular exit (which totally needs a redesign, a right-hand turn lane, for example) just save yourself this experience. There's a Wall of Fame here, on the west wall, featuring pictures of plenty of celebrities who've dined here over the years. After our meal I felt very, very sorry that the Silver Moon had the unique pleasure of serving these people, particularly Lynda Carter. That's my Lasso of Truth, Ruth.

After a long journey from Memphis and on our way to Santa Fe, we stopped for food. I believe our options were Dennys and the Silver Moon. I dont do Dennys. So, we took our chances at the. SIlver Moon. Yes, it is a dusty little cafe in the middle of nowhere. It is clearly family run, and the decor is tired, but I personally like kitschy kind of stuff, and the gift shop was right up my alley with its "treasures". Our server was no nonsense, but polite. I guess if you need someone to chat you up, you are better off at the Dennys down the street. After a long day of driving, I prefer a server who doesnt hover. My husband had the green chile stew and ate every bite. I had the tamales with both red and green sauce. It was delicious. They also serve Starbucks, which is a welcome sight for a weary traveler. I avoid chains, especially on a road trip. Yes, there were lots of locals, but, I didnt feel unwanted in this cute little diner. I personally liked the vinyl booth seats and plastic tablecloths. The food was tasty and reasonable. I hope to make it out there again soon.

Very nice place and friendly people. I ordered a pick three dinner - beef taco, beef enchilada, pork tamale. Oh soooo good!! Everything is fresh and homemade. Nice gift shop too. If I am ever in this area, I will absolutely stop again. They also serve beer and wine (and Starbucks) but I have to pass this time. The menu has a lot of options with traditional American favorites but the page with Mexican dishes got all of my attention.

The only reason why this is 2 stars and not 1 is because of our waitress. She tried sooooo hard to get every table their food on time, but she was the only one on the actual floor and they apparently only had one cook in their kitchen. So, yeah...disaster. We easily waited an hour for food. I will say that the green chile stew I had was fairly awesome and it had a good spice level to it; it just took forever and a day to get, even though it was probably prepped and ready to go in a pot in the back. I wanted to give our server a hug because you could tell she was having a rough day. Hire more people or at the very least another cook so your orders don't get so backed up!

While driving to Las Vegas from Oklahoma, I stopped at the Silver Moon to eat. It was nicely decorated but that was about it. Actually the service was quite fast. The food was terrible. OMG!! I will never eat there again. The sopaipillas were like pieces of cardboard soaked in oil. Hurt my teeth. I could not chew them at all. The green chili stew was horrible. The chili relleno was disgusting and I had never seen anything like that before. Filled with orange cheese. Not sure what kind and the batter on the outside was crispy!!! ugh!!! Never again. No Score~ And the waitress was rude from the minute we sat down.. No tip for her!!!

Sit right back and you'll hear a tale.. a tale of a meal gone wrong.. If I could give this place ZERO STARS, I would. I guess it can have one star just for the fact it's got history to it. I'm sure the original owner would be horrified if they could see what it was like now. Decor wise, the place is falling apart. The seat cushions have springs poking out of them! There were some dank looking vinyl tablecloths as well. It's a small place with a gift shop toward the front. They do have a wall of 'celebrities' who have eaten there, and most of them I had never heard of, although they do have a photo of Angelina Jolie on the wall. Our waitress was downright irritable. She was trying to rush us, and I'm pretty sure she lied when we asked her some questions about the menu. It was all very strange. There were flies buzzing around us the entire meal. And, I mean like half a dozen flies. Disgusting! We kept having the wave them away from our 'food'. I use the word 'food' lightly. My husband said his food was 'okay' but mine was downright disgusting. One of the worst, if not THE WORST, plate of food I have ever had put in front of me. I had a plate with a chile relleno, a cheese enchilada and a cheese tamale. The food was clearly from a freezer, and I'm pretty sure the relleno had been frostbitten. It was all smothered in a mouth numbing chile sauce to try and hide the stank. I seriously took 2-3 bites and left the rest. The man I assume to be the manager AND the waitress passed us multiple times, but never asked if there was a problem with my food. I'm pretty sure they know their food is complete garbage. This place should just be shut down. I'd bet you almost anything they've got health violations going on. I'm sorry Silver Moon, but you're a landmark I wouldn't be sad to see go.

The waitress obviously didn't want to be there, and as you will see, obviously doesn't know how to listen. I ordered the two cheese enchilada plate and asked for a green sauce instead of the red. The waitress indicated that was fine. Also ordered the pinto beans and pestola (spelling?) as the sides. What I received were enchiladas covered with RED sauce, spanish rice and pestola about 6-7 minutes after my friend received his hamburger (with wilted lettuce and dried pickles). When I informed her that I ordered green sauce and pinto beans, the waitress said, "What do you want me to do about it?" REALLY? What I'd like is for you to have a better attitude and LISTEN. Too many people out of work....if you don't want to be there then don't be. When she came with th check she only charged us $5 for the sides. The tip reflected the service...we will not be back.

This place looked like the most run-of-the-mill, touristy, family-chain restaurant in the world, especially being located on the famous "Route 66." Well, I was thrown for a curve ball when I ate their food. I was really happy to see that they had some New Mexico classics on the menu. Most of the menu is run of the mill, but if you make it out here, do shoot for something unique. I ordered the red chile pork with blue corn tortillas and green chile pinto beans. The pork was perfectly moist, and it had just the right amount of heat. The green chile sauce for the pinto beans had a nice kick. A great joint to stop at a crossroads for many big cities in New Mexico; it is a tad family-oriented and touristy, but the food does come up to par.

It looked promising, especially if you saw what the other options were, but it failed. Too much money for too weak of food. The corn tortillas we ordered with our fajitas were dripping with oil. It was like they had run out of paper towels and so they wiped up the grease spill with the tortillas.

A nice little restaurant with typical roadside gift shop. Food was excellent and homemade quality. Coffee was Starbucks brand and while A bit strong, it was good. A little pricey but worth it. Service was a bit slow, but it made for a good excuse to finish out coffee. Definitely friendly and family oriented. Dessert was a MUST! Not bad for Santa Rosa!

Nice quiet restaurant. Reasonably priced. The carne adovada is great.

Ate here after reading reviews on yelp. There was a pair of police escorting a prisoner at the table next to us. The bathroom light was out and there was a lantern instead of fixing the problem. The food was ok...nothing great and we were overcharged 10 dollars. The service was awful but the place was clean and had a cute gift shop attached.

Had dinner at the Silver moon Cafe this evening and really loved the smoky bacon, chilies and cheese quesada. The meal comes with great rice and beans. The service is prompt and friendly, atmosphere is homey and casual. Great place for travelers looking for a taste of NM. The silver jewelry at the counter is pretty nice too.

Thank goodness we bypassed Denny's, not a place we frequent, and found Silver Moon Cafe! We were on the road and needed breakfast. Great find! It's a cute spot with friendly service. We were seated and our waitress came right over to say hello. I ordered pancakes with toast and eggs and it hit the spot! I know it's not hard to do breakfast, but this was really delicious and not greasy. Our waitress even brought over some raspberry habanero jelly for us to try with our breakfast. I was a little iffy to try it since I'm not a fan of raspberries, but I'm glad I did. It was nice to have the jelly with my pancakes instead of just using syrup. Thank you Silver Moon for the yummy breakfast and great service & atmosphere!

DON'T TOUCH THE MENU ..... unless you're carring a hand sanitizer. The plastic encased menu's are beyond Filithy. They look and feel, as if they were submerged in an OUTHOUSE. The food overall taste Terrible, 'am thinking they use menu's as a herb !! The booths are ripped and falling apart.

Zero stars!! Food was horrible. Took one bite and I'm still feeling sick hours later. We told them we could not eat food and how bad it was and they still charged us. I paid but told them I would leave review online. Another couple was also complaining about food - and there was only 4 tables full while we were there.

After a 15 hour drive I roll into Silver Moon ready for a cold beer and a to go order. The waitress was super awesome. She suggested the chicken soft tacos and brought me chips and dip while I waited. She was on top of my drinks and wrapped it all up to go for me with all the awesome condiments. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. The tacos are amazing! More than I could even eat. I definitely recommend this to anyone staying Santa Rosa. The walls inside have tons of autographed celebrity photo of people who have pass through and enjoyed. They have a cute gift shop. I love this place and will make sure it's a stop on my road trips from now on :)

Great atmosphere, consistent and great service. Been eating there for 5 years as I travel through, love the huevos rancheros with red sauce and their nachos but don't have as much luck with other menu items. They do serve many choices. Nice place to get in out of the sun listen to relaxing music and eat some good food!

Ate here as a family (2 adults, 3 kids) while driving through. Food took a long time to arrive at our table, and the table behind us never received one of their entrees. Service was fine and it seemed the kitchen was at fault. Given the limited choices for dining in Santa Rosa, I'd say it was a decent choice. But next time we will stop to eat in a different town if possible.

I was really hoping to be surprised by this little local dive as the dining choices were slim in Santa Rosa. The service was decent: somewhat friendly and slightly inattentive(waitresses were sitting at one of the dining tables chatting between rounds). The Mexican dishes were sub-par, which I was kind of expecting. It wasn't awful, but not very good either. My niece got the chicken alfredo and it WAS awful. The sauce had no flavor and the chicken tasted like the plastic packaging it came out of and the texture was very wrong. The prices were too high for the quality of food and the gift shop was cheesy.

Just ate at the Silver Moon. Supposedly the place has been around since 1959....How? I took the bait that Solomon and Kristina threw out there. Actually the bait might have been more flavorful. Nothing that the six people at our table ordered originated in flavor-town. How do you serve such a variety of food so quick? Easy - the frozen stuff goes into the microwave. One bite and the chicken-fried steak went to the center of the table. The beans and rice on the three of the plates went untouched (in New Mexico, it should be a jailable offense to serve pre-packaged beans and rice for monetary compensation. When you have pictures on the menu the same as the box in the grocery store, you know you are in trouble. I found it very interesting when the waitress asked how the food was, before we could answer, she was offering cheesecake-on-the-house. Hmmm, I'll bet the cheesecake vendor does a big business here.

Good food, had the mesquite chicken with bacon. As stated elsewhere, the cushions on the booths were worn down, but who cares?!

Tried the Enchiladas de Santa Fe which weren't bad. But their rice reminded me of spaghetti Os. I recommend avoiding the roast beef sandwich. I think this place is pretty good if you consider the competition of which I think DQ is the only other contender. Did see Ronny Cox of Beverly Hills Cop fame eating here.

The restroom (men's) was filthy. Literally. The servers were either lazy, spending most of their time sitting at a table with a couple old regulars, or surly, refusing to provide a decent side order unless prodded. This place is past its prime, whenever that was. The Carne Adovada is good, but there is plenty of good Carne Adovada in New Mexico. There is no reason why one should have to cajole a surly and lazy waitress into bringing you a small bowl at the prices they charge. Lazy, absent, owner, and lazy help add up to "forget about it." There are far better places to eat in New Mexico. Try Mary and Tito's in Albuquerque or Jerry's in Gallup. Top notch New Mexican food and they don't treat you like shit just for coming in.

Honestly, I had a wonderful dinner here. I ordered the Spicy Southwest Chicken Salad and it was great. It came out sort of slow, but nonetheless the salad itself was tasty and fresh. For $8.99, it was way better than getting a greasy burger from Mcdonalds down the street.

Excellent food. And the rellenos were fabulous and authentic. I should know as I grew up in southern New Mexico. Waitresses were slow though.

Stopped in here on April 7, 2012. Greeted by a well-dressed host and seated at a table in this quaint restaurant on Route 66. The place is small and unassuming with interesting autographed pictures on the walls to look at while you wait. There is also a small gift shop with a few interesting what-nots and books to browse. The service was friendly and mostly decent. Although, we did have to flag down a different waitress for a tea refill since ours disappeared after bringing our entrees. The tea, by the way, was very flavorful but I can't remember the brand name even though we did ask. After our order we were brought chips and a small bowl of salsa that was good and had a bit of bite to it and was chunky while the chips were crisp and just salty enough. Our entrees, chicken enchiladas in blue corn tortillas (one with posole -hominy- and beans and the other with rice and beans--all tasty) were served quickly. They came out so hot we're pretty sure they were microwaved and we had to wait a few minutes for them to cool. The chicken inside was moist and tender as were the tortillas. The sauce was tasty but there could have been a bit more of it. It was good enough that we'll give it another shot.

This diner plays up it's history on Rt. 66 and offers some souvenirs for the restaurant visitors. Having opened in 1959, the diner's downside is that it's in a small town with little capital, so it hasn't been renovated ever. The gold vinyl squishy seats in the booths haven't been changed ever, so watch your rear when you sit down. Given the deteriorating decor, they have some good food to offer the passer-through. Appropriately spicy green chile is available for your enchiladas, burrito or tamales, making this a tasty stop in this small town. Overall, this is a good choice among few options in Santa Rosa.

We stopped here on our way to Albuquerque because the parents had said it was a good place to eat. I was starving and ordered their chili relleno and was really, really disappointed. When she sat the plate down in front of me I was confused because I didn't think it was what I ordered. When it doesn't look like a relleno but they call it one be afraid!

If you are reading this review, you must be passing through Santa Rosa and have likely spent a good portion of your day in a car. Tired, hungry and looking for a place to eat; just remember, you're in Santa Rosa. The Silver Moon offers up Mex/American fare that is uninspired but edible. We tried the enchiladas which at best were OK. On a more positive note, the "Alien Beer", a local brew from Roswell was tasty and cold, the tables were clean and it sure beat taking a chance on Denny's!

Too bad - gone so far downhill. We've been stopping at the Silver Moon for years coming and going thru NM. The last 3 times we've been there it's been surly service, lousy food, high prices. Last time we were through (Sept 4, '10): Surly waitress Brought us dirty silverware: I sent it back, nicely. Brought us MORE dirty silverware. I sent it back nicely. During the scarce drink refills she gave me someone else's tea (mine was not sweet - this was ,,, and I didn't have a straw - this did) - YUCK! Final tab: 5 burgers, 1 onion rings and 3 cofffees: $72.00. We'll never be back. And they've stopped asking "how was your meal?". Wonder why...

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
